With the new director of the British Council, Richard Weyers
more attention is being given to English language in Sudan. The
British Council ran a three weeks course in the Teaching
Knowledge Test offered by Cambridge University for tertiary
level EL teachers. The course was organized by Gray Ben, the
English language advisor, at the British Council. The course
was located into two different venues at the same time to
facilitate attendance of teachers. One of these venues was
SELTI. There were 30 university teachers from al over the
country and 10 from SELTI staff. The course duration was 3 three
weeks, 4 hours per day. Two British experienced trainers came
for this course, Jenny and Steve. A week after the end of the
course, the candidates sat for the Cambridge TKT test.
At the same time some local staff was being trained by David
Watkins to become future TKT trainers. English language teachers
in Sudan benefited from this course, besides the training for
the test; they got involved in activities and discussions which
could enrich their knowledge and experience (teacher
development)
SELTI staff achieved very high bands in the test compared with
the university staff
