- When the
secondary section in Gordon Memorial College was first started
at 1905 , some of its foreign directors put a plan to enable
students to sit for Cambridge Certificate Examination.
So a council was formed named the School Certificate Examination
Council , it was under the supervision of the University of
Cambridge Exam. Board – London.
- The University of Cambridge Examination Board was responsible
of :
1- Putting the conditions for the students who will sit for the
exams.
2- Setting & printing & Correction of the questions.
3- Issuing the result & sending it to The Sudan.
- The first group of the Sudanese students sat for the
University of
Cambridge Certificate Examination in December 1938.
This way continued till the year 1953 . The certificate at that
time was named : The General Certificate of Education. GCE .
- The Sudan Examinations Council was established in December
1954 by a decree of the General Governor , its policy was that,
the responsibility of the examinations is a joint between The
University of Cambridge & the Sudan Examinations Council.
- Since 1952 , the start time of the educational year was
changed to be from July to March instead of from January to
December , according to the new educational calendar the first
group sat for the exam in March 1956.
- Some of the following examination procedures started to be
done in the Sudan :
1- The condition for the student to sit for the exam.
2- Selection of the questions setters.
3- Selection of the correctors of the exam.
- But the revision and Evaluation and the result issuance was
continued to be done in England with co-operation between The
University of Cambridge & the Sudan Examinations Council. That
continued till 1962.
- In 1962 the Sudan Examinations Council name was changed to be
the Sudan Examinations Committee with secretariat , its law was
appeared in the same year and Sudan Examinations Committee was
given all the powers of the examination’s processing to be done
in the Sudan, except the printing of the exams. Which continued
to be printed in Oxford University Press.
- The sudan Examinations Secretariat is a technical &
administrative device for all the examination processing, by
sending the questions paper to the exam’s centres and follow-up
the procedures like receiving and preparing for the correction
of the answer’s books then after that the supervision of the
result control committees then issuing and announcement of the
result after the adoption of the Sudan Examinations Committee .
- That was continued till 1969.
- In 1970 the Sudan Examinations Committee was cancelled by a
ministerial decision by Dr. Mohieldin Sabir and all its
authorities was
given to a foreign expert.
In this year a great changes happened in the educational
policies
which was called ( The education ladder ).
- In 1972 The examinations authorities returned back to the
Sudan
Examinations Committee .
The different
names of the secondary School Certificate :
1- The general Certificate of Education (GCE) , it qualifies the
student to study in the University of Cambridge. ( 1938 – 1954
).
2- The Sudan School Certificate Examination . ( 1956 – 1970 ).
3- The Higher Secondary School Certificate Examination . ( 1971
– 1979 ).
- Till 1969 the certificate issuance was in the Grade’s system.
- After 1969 the certificate issuance changed to in centennial
(percentage).
In the year 2001 the General Education Planning & Organizing Law
was appeared, and in the material judgements reason (22) of this
law the Minister of Education signed a decision of forming the
Sudan Examinations Council instead of the Sudan Examinations
Committee .
